The first semi final in the Francis McGirl Cup was played last Friday night in Ossies. A good crowd turned up to see one of the best semi finals in a long time between McGirls and the Poor Scholar, a game of high scoring and great finishing, it went to the last leg in the last game in a thrilling finish. Poor Scholar winning on a score line of (5) games to (4). They will play the winners of the second semi final between Jackies and Fenagh still to be played. Thanks to Sean Mahon, Damien Flynn and Paul Gill for marking all the games.


Building a Wind Turbine Course:

Building a Wind Turbine Course starts in March in Ballinamore Education Centre (Old Vocational School) one day a week for 8 weeks. This course is funded by MSL ETB. Ballinamore Bridge Club

Results of bridge held on Thursday 16th January are as follows: 1st Monica Sharpley and Bernie Flynn 2nd Evelyn Smith and Marian Quinn 3rd Mary McTiernan and Mary Flynn and Kay Dolan and Ruth Creamer. The next meeting of the bridge club is on Thursday 30th January. All players welcome.

Church Notes:

Recent Deaths: We pray for the soul of Peggy Lawderdale nee Curran (London, sister of Lena McGovern, Aghoo) who died on Wednesday. Our sympathy to her family. 

Baptism: We welcome Luke, Francis Prior into our Christian Community as he received the sacrament of Baptism last weekend in Ballinamore. Congratulations to his parents.

Aughawillan Church: The 150th celebration of Aughawillan Church will take place on Sunday the 7th of June with a celebrated mass at 12:30pm. This will be followed with the serving of refreshments in the Community Centre. It would be appreciated if you would let your families and relatives know of this date. To mark this occasion a book will be published on the history of the church and the community. Should you have family photographs of celebrations in the church such as weddings or 1st Communions, particularly if they go back before the church was refurbished, would you be kind enough to give them to Des Quinn or Colleen Quinn. They will return them to you. 

The Golden Jubilee celebration of the ordination of Monsignor Thomas McGovern will take place on Sunday 23rd of August with a concelebrated mass at 11am. Please mark both celebrations in your diaries.

Parish Pastoral Council Meeting next Wednesday 22nd at 8:30 in The New Parish Centre (former old Scoil Bhrid Naofa across from Community Center).

Vacancy for Diocesan Director of Pastoral Services: The Diocese of Kilmore is recruiting for the position of Diocesan Director of Pastoral Services. The main duties will include:

  • The organising and facilitating of adult religious faith formation programmes.
  • Supporting parish pastoral councils, pastoral area councils and the diocesan pastoral council.
  • Providing formation training for specific lay ministries in the diocese.
  • Promoting the achievement of the current and any future diocesan pastoral plan.

Tackling Rural Crime:

The National Rural Safety Forum is an initiative aimed at tackling rural crime run by An Garda Síochana and the IFA. A requirement of the forum is to establish a National Community Engagement Day across the country which will take place on 31st Jan 2020. A meeting has been arranged to take place in The Commercial Hotel Ballinamore at 8:30pm on 31st Jan. This will give people an opportunity to discuss issues of concern regarding rural crime and safety. A member of An Garda Síochana will be present on the night.

Centenary Concert in Bush Hotel

Tish Dunleavy and the Co. Leitrim Percy French group are performing the songs and recitations of Percy French in the Bush Hotel on Friday 24th January starting at 8pm. Proceeds will go to Woodbrook National School fund. It is fitting that this event is taking  place on the exact date of the centenary of the death of Percy French.

Leitrim County Council - Hedge Cutting Grant Scheme 2019/2020

Leitrim County Council invites Applications for the Hedge Cutting Grant Scheme 2019/2020. Please note that it is the responsibility of Landowners and Local Communities/Residents to cut roadside hedges/trees along the Public Road Network. The Grant is €75 per km of roadside hedge/overhanging trees which are cut back. The Minimum length of roadside hedges to be cut is 2km per application. Application Forms and full Details of this Scheme are available from the Leitrim County Council Website - www.leitrimcoco.ie and also from the Roads Department of Leitrim County Council – Telephone No. 071 9620005 Ext. No. 604 /606. Closing Date for receipt of completed Application Forms for this Hedge Cutting Grant Scheme is Friday 14th February 2020.


1728 Map in Ballinamore Library:

The Ballinamore Library January ‘item of the month’ is a fabulous recreation of Moll’s 1728 map of Leitrim. The 5 baronies of the County: Carrigallen, Mohill, Leitrim, Drumahaire and Rosclogher are clearly marked. Opening hours: Tuesday 10 – 7pm; Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10 – 5pm with daily lunch closing 1 – 2pm; Saturday 10 – 2pm.

Well over a hundred walkers took part in the annual Operation Transformation Walk organised by Ballinamore Athletic Club last Saturday morning. The Club organised the Walk on behalf of Leitrim Sports Partnership and the Walk leaders were Michelle Maguire and Pat O'Toole. Ballinamore Area Community Council secretary Damien O'Brien also contributed on the day to the success of the event. Club training at the Sports Hall continues on Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00 pm. and new members can join any evening. Next Sunday the Leitrim Indoor Athletics Championships are taking place in Carrick on Shannon Sports Hall commencing at 2:00 pm.
